Get Yer Goat!

A good pal of mine, and excellent music writer/photographer, Charlie Steffens revealed something to me this weekend that I was unaware of; he's a pretty good singer. Through 5 degrees of seperation, Charlie wound up being invited to one of my family gatherings, where Karaoke was featured prominently (don't ask). It turns out, Charlie's a pretty good singer.

Though I do not have video proof of Charlie's excellent versions of classic from Frank Sinatra and others, I do have proof that his voice can sooth the savage beast.

Check out the video below, as Charlie makes a baaaad attemp to get the goat of some petting zoo residents.

"Peggle" for iPhone, "UFC Undisputed" and Why Wolfram Alpha? My Chat with Kevin Pereira from "Attack of the Show"

Each week (OK, each week he feels like it), I speak to G4TV's Kevin Pereira. He's the co-host of "Attack of the Show" and loves talking tech, games and freaks of culture. The interview airs on KFWB 980 AM in Los Angeles.

This week, we talk about that silly, but completely addictive video game, "Peggle" coming to iPhone, as well as a new game that captures realistic mixed martial arts action a la UFC, and why in the world we need Wolfram Alpha.

Interview with Larry King

Legendary radio and TV talk host, Larry King has a best selling book out called "My Remarkable Journey" and this morning, Penny Griego and I spoke with King, live on KFWB 980 AM in Los Angeles.

King was jovial as usual. King said that of all the people he'd like to interview, he's like to get Fidel Castro. He said he'd also like to interview God. But, to illustrate what he's learned about television over the years, he said, if he booked God, and Monica Lewinsky became available, God would get bumped.

I Couldn't Have Said it Better

As I was sitting around wondering how I would sum up my feelings about the Ducks season, Suzanne Broughton, a blogger, and writer for the Orange County Register snapped off a jewel.

Read it here.

I couldn't have said it better.

Vacation on Location (Originally Airing May 14 on KFWB)

A feature interview we just started doing on KFWB is turning out to be particularly interesting. Each Thursday at 7:47 we talk to Harry Medved of Fandango.com. He's authored a book called Hollywood Escapes, and each week we talk about locations you might not think of, that are full of Hollywood history, and worth, at the very least, a picnic, if not an entire weekend.

This week we talked about a couple Southern California day trips, that include UCLA and Cal State Northridge, where scenes for some high profile movies were shot; scenes for, among others, "Angels and Demons" and "Star Trek."

Listen to the entire interview that my co-anchor, Penny Griego and I did with Harry Medved this week. Click here to listen, or "right-click" to download. (TIP: Subscribe to my blog to, in the future, allow your rss-reader, or podcatcher to download the enclosed file automatically.)

"Our House" - A Bone to Pick with Ducks Fans

As most of you know, I was the public address announcer for the Anaheim Ducks from 1997 to the Stanley Cup Championship year of 2007. Today I enjoy the post-season battle with the common Ducks fan. This is the best time of the year, by far!

Throughout the years I bemoaned the chemistry in the former Arrowhead Pond-now-Honda Center. No matter who the Ducks played at home, there would always be a lot of fans wearing the jersey of the visiting team. It's the worst when the Ducks play the Redwings.
I need confirmation on this from folks who follow teams in other cities, but something tells me one would feel pretty uncomfortable wearing a Ducks jersey at "The Joe." I imagine if I visited Detroit and wore a Ducks jersey to a game, I'd be visited by an endless parade of locals who would "insist" I change my attire.

For Ducks fans, I ask you, go ahead, make it uncomfortable for those who would disrespect the home ice of a team that, in it's short career in the NHL, has one of the best rates of post-season appearances, and an even better success rate.

Come on people, "Our House" means "OUR HOUSE." You either abide by the host's rules, or you don't eat.

Oh, a note for the Ducks ticket sales folks: Do you have to sell glass seats to Redwings fans? To me, that's a lot like providing aid and comfort to the enemy. This is war, right?

VOTE - Big Moments in Game 6 Detroit vs Anaheim

Which play was the biggest moment in last night's Ducks/Redwings game?
The NHL asks the question and you can vote from among the following:

  • Ericsson bails out Ozzy
  • Getzlaf gives Ducks lead
  • Perry puts Ducks up 2-0
  • Hiller halts Filppula
  • Franzen gets Wings close

An Interview with Adam Lambert's Mentor (One of them)

Yesterday, Penny Griego and I spoke to Kathie Urban (Thanks Rhonda Kramer) on KFWB. Kathie's the Director of Met 2, the stage group that American Idol front runner (and the contestant American Idol Judge Simon Cowell says will win this season) Adam Lambert belonged to since he was a kid...and she organized Lambert's home town visit in San Diego last weekend.

Click here to listen (right click to download) to our entire interview.

Also, we did an interview with KFWB traffic reporter, Rhonda Kramer, about her trip to San Diego to witness the Lambert homecoming. Click here to listen to that conversation.

Ducks' Wisniewski Showing Improvement

NHL.com Correspondent Eric Stephens has filed the following report:

Anaheim Ducks defenseman James Wisniewski continued to recover at UCI Medical Center in Orange County Wednesday after being struck in the chest by a shot during Game 3 of the Western Conference semifinals against the Detroit Red Wings.

Wisniewski is expected to remain at the hospital until Thursday morning, although a team spokesman said he could be released earlier if he continues to improve. He is being held there as a standard precautionary measure after being diagnosed with a lung contusion.

Ducks coach Randy Carlyle did not speculate on Wisniewski's availability for Game 4 Thursday night at the Honda Center, but...(more)

The Hockey Gods Have Spoken

You know, things have a way of evening out over time.

Nobody likes a bad call, especially when it goes against your team. Clearly, the Detroit Red Wings and their fans have a legitimate gripe with a call in the final moments of last night's game 3 of the NHL Western Conference Semi-final in Anaheim. Referee Brad Watson lost sight of the puck during a Red Wing rush to the Ducks doorstep, and he blew his whistle, just as the puck squirted free and Detroit's Johan Franzen poked it into the net.

Did Watson blow the call? Perhaps. But he made a call and stuck with it under a great deal of post-season pressure. Admirable. But all teams experience what they consider "bad calls" and it's not like the Ducks haven't experienced their share of calls that, at the time, seemed untimely if not erroneous.

I think the Hockey Gods even this stuff out. I can sleep well considering last night a cosmic wash when I recall 47-year-old thespian, Chris Chelios and his remarkable ability to draw a penalty and avoid a dive call. Or how about the apparent "cheap shot" to the mouth of James Wisniewski, delivered by the elbow of Tomas Holmstrom, moments after Wisniewski took a slapshot to the chest. The elbow drew blood, but the double-minor never came.

Did I feel great about last night's win? Sure I did. Did the Ducks feel great? A win is a win. Last night moves the team closer to their ultimate goal. I suspect the Red Wings will be sufficiently fired up for game 4, as will the Ducks if they saw the video of Holmstrom's elbow. It should be a barn burner...and the Gods will be watching!

It's a Best of 5 Series Now!

The Ducks steal one in triple overtime at "The Joe."

Man, I was worried there because the Wings dominated the first two overtimes. The Ducks were out shot 2 to 1 and most of puck controlling was done by the Wings.

But, after an NBC on-camera chat with Darren Pang and Todd Marchant. Happy Todd said with a smile on his face, "It's the playoffs. It's great!"

1:15 into the third overtime, Wisniewski banked one off the boards to #22, who bobbed and weaved his way through the neutral zone, past defenders and the blue line, then let a left wing rockets go, and it flew past Chris Osgood's left ear. It was Marchant's 2nd playoff overtime goal, and probably not his last.

It's back to Anaheim for games 3 and 4, Tuesday and Thursday at Honda Center, for what amounts to a Best of 5 starting with 2 home ice starts for The Ducks. It's going to be interesting to see how the Red Wings respond after what could be a mentally devastating loss at home in 3 Overtimes.

Give the advantage in game 3 to the Ducks.

Lovin' this game right now!

Kogi Success!

I feel quite privileged to be among the 1300 or so people The Chefs and Crew of the Kogi Truck are following on Twitter. Tonight's truck run was purposely kept on the DL as an experiment.

The location was the same as last Saturday, a block of warehouses in Santa Fe Springs, right along the Amtrak rails. I got a direct message from Kogibbq to keep it quiet, but help make it a success. So I direct messaged a few people. Even the Kobibbq Website, http://kogibbq.com, listed tonight's stop as "6PM-9PM@Buena Park - tbd." Actually, Santa Fe Springs is not far from Buena Park. Last week, the Buena Park Police broke up the party before it started, insisting Permits needed to be pulled for this kind of commerce. Too bad they were hard-nosed about it. I am sure they would have gotten some free food from Chef Roy.

My youngest daughter, Victoria, decided to come with me. We showed up at about 8:30 and the crowd had already died down. I spoke to the guys at the truck about the success of today's strategy, and they said it was still busy, but people were happier; happier because the lines were shorter, and there was no worry about cutting the line off at some point.

I guess the Kogi Truck has made a ton of money already. Could it be the Kogi team is planning to phase out the trucks? Just a thought. I'm glad I got to sample everything.

Last week, when the trucks were booted out of Buena Park, 200 or more people rushed to the back-up spot in Santa Fe Springs. It was overwhelming at first, as only one of the two Kogi trucks was there, Roja. In order to make sure everyone got some food, they had to limit customers to 3 tacos each. That was a let down, because I bought enough cash to sample everything on the menu. Oh well, the tacos were good. Tonight, I tried the Kimchi Quesadillas and the Burritos (Short Ribs and Spicy Pork). Delicious!

If you haven't tried the Kogi Trucks fusion of Mexican and Korean cuisine, you should soon.

I am in Shame

Yesterday I got home from work around noon, as usual. I ate some lunch, then thought I'd get in a nice nap so I'll be good and rested when Game 1 of the Ducks/Redwings Western Conference Semifinals starts.

What a nap! I woke up at 6:30. I freshened up and positioned myself in front of the TV and started looking for the game. Hmm. Not on Versus, not on Prime...and why is the Boston/Carolina game on? I guess it makes sense, that game is in the 3rd, so when it's over, the Ducks will be on.

I quickly checked the FiOs TV schedule, and there's no game. What gives?

I dark, cold feeling swept over my body. It can't be. Did I just miss the game? Oh no! The shame of it...AND the Ducks lost by one goal. Maybe they needed just one more fan to keep them in the game.

How will I ever live this down?

Tomorrow? Don't worry, I'm all over it. 11am!
